Allison Reynolds
Nominated by Rick Horne, May 2020
A Hospital setting is technically a workplace for health professionals, no matter what function is performed. As a patient, whether for emergency services, surgery or a varied range of conditions, this can be a very scary place. As professions in the health setting, you go about your daily routines like clockwork. As an overnight patient, having recently had surgery, my experience was unique. Having read about my procedure, I naturally had concerns. Everyone at the PRH was helpful, considerate and conscious of my anxieties. From Admitting, Pre-Op, through the surgery and finally to be discharged, the final couple of hours was special. I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast, did what was necessary to get released. Allison Reynolds RN was the nurse in charge of my release. She carried out her duties in a kind, respectful manner and after a few anxious moments, I was cleared to go home - catheter-free!! Nurse Reynolds was kind, gentle and left me with a great feeling about my experience. On that day, Allison was a true Guardian Angel.
Dr Plante, Jessica McRobbie, Kaitlin Purcell
Nominated by Wendy Donohue, May 2020
From the moment the ambulance attendants came to my apartment at 12:10pm to the time they took me to Ottawa (3:30pm), the care was above excellence. Dr. Plante, nurses Jessica + Kaitlin + the lab tech, used their knowledge and ability, working as a team, to give me the best treatment for my heart attack. The trip to Ottawa with the 2 attendants and Jessica was fast. I was in the stent lab by 5:15pm and didn't have time to say "thanks". I have 2 stents in the right coronary artery and in June will have 2 more in the left side. Thank you sincerely for the BEST CARE anyone can get ANYWHERE. My prayers are with you to keep you all safe during this virus.

Alanah Nagora
Katrina Maclellan, December 2018
Alanah was simply amazing. She was the only nurse there that I really felt a connection with. I had attempted suicide and self harmed and was brought up by AMH. Alanah was the only one when she said " I understand" that truly understood because she said shes been through this too. The first time i had her as a nurse, she told me that everything would be okay and that things would get better. I was so far gone that I didnt believe her. But I was always looking forward to when she said she was coming back for another shift. When I was crying and self harming In the hospital and begging for her to look away so I could sneak out and go kill myself, she helped calm me down and even made me laugh through the tears. She gave me the strength to get through those 3 long months by sitting with me for as long as I needed, for playing cards with me and helping me get distracted. To reading all the negative thoughts I had written down. For listening to me say things over and over. She gave me hope. She gave me a reason to finally get up during the day. She gave me something to look forward to when I knew she was coming back. She gave me the strength I needed to get through the day, even when she wasnt there. She gave me strength to be honest with not only her, but the rest of the staff so they can help me in my recovery. No matter what kind a day I had, no matter how many times I cried and hurt myself, she was always there and always managed to get my laughing in the end. When I left, I wanted to bring her with me lol, but like every other time we talked, she told me I was going to be alright. Alanah has the biggest heart I've ever seen. She is a beautiful, strong, amazing person and I hope she continues to work in the mental health field because she will change so many lives. Because when I wanted to die, she held me up until I could walk on my own again.
And Alanah.. you were right. Everything will be okay again.

At a time when Dwight was unable to express himself and in severe discomfort, Sandy's positive attitude and fun sense of humor was instrumental in keeping Dwight's spirits up during the most difficult time of his life. Suzanne & Dwight Giroux, March 2018
While there were many positive influences over Dwight's recovery, I would like to thank Jennifer J for her contribution. From almost Day 1, she was there to encourage Dwight to get out of bed and start moving. Not only was she successful, but her gentle way of persuasion and instinctively knowing when he had enough meant the world to him. He often praised her behind her back, saying that she could pretty much run the place on her own. Thank you Jennifer for tending to Dwight's emotional and physical needs. We are forever grateful for your contribution to his rehabilitation. He is getting braver and braver each day walking with his new best friend "Hemi". Hopefully he'll ditch him before the summer!

Dr. John Epps, January 2018
I was truly fortunate to have you as my attending physician. In fact, when I arrived and found out you were on duty, I actually relaxed knowing I could leave the decision making to you. Without fuss, you quickly assessed me and ordered the right stuff to sort out my symptoms. Your skill quickly ruled out a list of pretty nasty diagnoses and allowed me to head home with a much better explanation for my illness. You also took time to explain all the details to my wife and included her in the decision making. Thanks Daniel.

M.J. Beier
Michael and Jo Anne Truskoski, August 2016
M.J. you are probably reading this and thinking "what did I do that was noteworthy of being a Guardian Angel?" The care and concern you provided is so sincere that no doubt it is just part of who you are so your would likely not consider your actions as special, but let us assure you they may made a big difference for us. M.J. you were training another R.N. in I.C.U. so you weren’t really proving direct patient care but you certainly made a huge difference when it came to caregiver care. I, Jo Anne, was just heading out of the I.C.U. the night of Monday, August 8th when I passed you working on a piece of equipment. You smiled and said "you’re driving back to Golden Lake right? Drive safely on the road, there are lots of critters out there." I smiled and kept walking and then I turned around and came back and asked if you had a minute for a question. You stopped what you were doing and quickly responded "absolutely, ask whatever you would like." After seven days of sitting by Michael’s bedside, this seemed to be my breakdown day and I found myself very nervous and filled with questions. At the point that I stopped to talk to you, I was so upset I was having a hard time figuring our how to get the words out of my mouth but you stood there and helped me through it. You listed to all my questions; you gave me answers but at no time made any empty promises. You gave me a lot of facts and information which gave me a real sense of comfort…this was exactly what I needed before I drove home. When I got home, I called the I.C.U. and you answered the phone and the first thing you said was "I’m so glad to hear that you made it home safe and sound." When you started your shift the next night, I went over to thank you for being so incredible that night before and you humbly shrugged it off saying you were happy to do it. Again that night you were there to answer a lot of questions for both Michael and I and it really made a difference for us. We both felt calmer and more comfortable with what was happening. M.J. you have a very special gift…THANK YOU for sharing it with us. You made a difference. You will never be forgotten.

Michael & Jo Anne Truskoski, August 2016
Rachel, you were our Guardian Angel from the moment Michael arrived in the Emergency Department on August 1st. You stayed on top of everything that was happening. We will never forget you coming in to Michael's cubicle in the ER Department ready to start an IV and when we asked you why you were starting an IV you said "I just want to stay on top of things so that I’m not holding up any procedures or treatments that the doctor might want to do." You seemed to follow Michael into I.C.U. and for the first few days/nights, you were his nurse which brought us so much comfort. We watched you and you were always busy; checking patients, providing care or making notes. You were the consummate professional yet had this incredible balance in showing care and concern for not only your patient but the caregiver as well. When our children and grandchild came to visit, you were always so accommodating and understanding. You were always just ahead of Michael’s pain and that made such an incredible difference. Rachel, you are professional, thorough and most important, you are empathetic. I’m sure you’re surprised by this Guardian Angel acknowledgment because nurses like you don’t realize they are doing something extraordinary, they just consider it their job. THANK YOU for the incredible care you provided. You made a difference and you will never be forgotten.

Nancy King
Nominated by Mike & Darcie Miller - September 2014
The space provided to write this thank you simply wasn’t enough for us to write everything we wanted to say. Both you and Dianne are two of the most compassionate and caring people we have ever encountered. I’d like to extend our sincere appreciation for all the care you provided Darcie and Elliott during his birth. It was scary to both watch Darcie endure so much pain and to sit there and be able to do nothing, but to also hear about Elliott being in distress. You two bravely took on the challenge and kept me calm during those tense moments which seemed to last a lifetime. We are very blessed to have had the opportunity to have two fantastic nurses who care so much about the patients and even the father who has very little of an idea on how to care for a newborn baby! With all this being said we have nominated the both of you and all the other nurses who were with us during our visit to the hospital and have made a $5 donation in each of your names. We hope you will wear the pin proudly and are certain you will provide more patients with the same outstanding care we were so lucky to have! Sincerely, Mike & Darcie Miller & Baby Elliott.

I am sending this note to express my appreciation for the care I received many times from Joey Allen while getting a CTY scan at Pembroke General Hospital. Cancer can be a very tiring time in your life and it is so refreshing to be cared for by a person with such an obvious love of his chosen career. Joey Allen never fails to put me at ease and just by his calm demeanour I am always about to focus on my ‘silver linings’.
Laughter is the best medicine and I never fail to have a few good laughs in his company. He is a truly caring and sincere professional who should be commended on his job performance. Sincerely and thankfully, Rhonda AuCoin.

She was always willing to answer any questions she could and encouraged us to contact her and get updates which was a huge relief as we are all out of town and were unable to be there every day for our Mother. Brenda went beyond the call of duty of providing medical care and took an interest in my mother as a whole person, seeking ways to help her emotionally as well as physically wherever she could. We cannot thank her enough for her help with Mom at a very difficult and stressful time in our lives. She represents the true spirit of what nursing care should be and she should be honoured for her commitment to it.

Betty Anne Kennedy, RN
Nominated by Gloria Deane-Freeman - February, 2008
It gives me great pleasure to nominate Betty Anne. Long before this program began, I told Betty Anne she was my Guardian Angel. I first met her when I had the misfortune of being treated for kidney failure. As my own doctor was out of town, I was being treated by several replacement doctors and needless to say, I was a little concerned that there wouldn’t be any consistency in my treatment. That, coupled with the stress of my illness, was cause for more than a little distress! Betty Anne seemed to sense my concern and took the time out of her hectic routine to talk with me and allay all my fears. She was also instrumental in getting me an appointment with Dr. Delbrouck who happened to be at the Hospital for the opening of the Dialysis Unit at that time.
Her pleasant demeanor and her ability to recognize the needs of her patients and furthermore her willingness to go the extra mile are to be commended. In this time of health care shortages and under-funding and the stresses that entails for those working under those conditions, it’s reassuring to know that there are those who go above and beyond the call of duty, to ensure that those in their care feel secure and cared for.
In this regard, I feel Betty Anne has more than met with requirements of a Guardian Angel! I feel blessed to have been looked after by her and even though I have not seen her since, I often think of her and her kindness! It was indeed a privilege to have been looked after by my Guardian Angel!
