Stone Fence Theatre’s High Times at the Heart Institute coming to Barry’s Bay, Deep River and Pembroke

by prh foundation in Entertainment, Fundraising Event 0 comments 1281

High Times at the Heart Institute, by Stone Fence Theatre, starring (from left) Shirley Hill, Lesley Sneddon, John Haslam, Peter Brown and Fran Pinkerton is coming to Barrys Bay on October 29, Deep River on November 12, and Pembroke November 18 and 19.

In partnership with local hospitals, Stone Fence Theatre is bringing its new fund-raising musical comedy, High Times to Barry’s Bay, Deep River and Pembroke.

Proceeds from play attendance go directly to the local hospitals, so it’s a great time for a great cause, the organizers says. This fall and winter, the show is touring the Valley, with the potential to raise at least $25,000 for hospitals and health care. The tour has already been to Eganville and Renfrew.

The musical comedy was written by Ish Theilheimer of Golden Lake, the company’s producer, and directed by Barry’s Bay resident Chantal Elie-Sernoskie. It celebrates Canada’s health care system and takes a humorous look at the subject of aging Baby Boomers coming to terms with mortality.

“The show was inspired by my own personal experience as a patient at the Ottawa Heart Institute,” says Theilheimer. “I have been so impressed by the care and service I’ve received both at the Institute and at all the local hospitals that are tied in with it. For instance, I received my first diagnostics in Barrys Bay and my rehab in Pembroke.”

Heart Institute founder Dr. Wilbert Keon attended the opening of the show and said about the show, “It was fabulous, fabulous, fabulous! I just thought it was so bang on.”

The plot involves four heart patients who find themselves thrust together by their health issues. They include Bobby (John Haslam) and Wendy (Fran Pinkerton), two aging rock and rollers and exes who can’t stand each other, left-wing cynic Arthur (Peter Brown), and Tea Party American Maggie (Lesley Sneddon), whose health insurance company leaves her high and dry. Toni (Shirley Hill), a stressed-out and overworked nurse tries to cope with all their needs. In the end, Wendy uses a secret from her old hippie days to save the day. Conrad Boyce, Nigel Epps, Cathy Lyons, Elaine Neigel make up the chorus, known as “The Interns.”  Derek Tolhurst plays bass, Evan Burgess plays guitar, and Theilheimer plays percussion in the show.

“It’s a sort of cross between the Marx Brothers and Peter Pan,” says Theilheimer. He says nurses and other health professionals have found the show particularly meaningful, with its portrayal of a stressed-out overworked nurse trying to take care of a demanding caseload. “They tell me it’s like I’ve been reading their email,” he said. “But that’s because I have so many friends who are nurses, including two cast members, Shirley Hill and Fran Pinkerton.”

In Barry’s Bay, the show will be on Saturday, Oct. 29, at Madawaska Valley District High School. In Deep River, it will be at Mackenzie Community School on Saturday, Nov. 12. In Pembroke, it will be at Calvin United Church on Nov. 18 and 19, with all shows starting at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $25.66 plus tax, with proceeds of the show going to support local hospitals.

Tickets for all shows are available from Stone Fence Theatre’s website www.stonefence.ca, from the box office by calling 613-628-6600 or from other local outlets.

OVER 500 PEOPLE VISITED OVER THE HOLIDAYS, RAISING

$7,800 FOR HEALTH CARE

(Pembroke) – The Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation is celebrating the efforts of Kirk and Lynda Dobbs who opened their home to 500 people in a two day fundraiser for rural health care.

“Our Foundation is touched by the generosity shown by the Dobbs who suggested and hosted this fundraiser,” said PRH Foundation Board Member Dave Gen. “When we come together as a community, many ideas can happen and as a result, we are creating a better future for everyone that our regional hospital serves.”
Kirk and Lynda Dobbs transformed their home into a Winter wonderland and hosted guests over two days in December and January respectively. Many of the attendees who came on the first day in December returned in January with friends and partners to marvel over the decorations as well as the exquisite home.

“Thank you to everyone who joined us,” shared Lynda. “Kirk and I had a terrific time hosting, and have enjoyed reading the fantastic comments in the guest book. It was a treat to bring so many people into our home for such a good cause.”

The Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation supports the regional health care services available to the over 100,000 people in its catchment area. Proceeds from the Dobbs Festive Family Home Tour are being directed to the upgrading and replacing equipment across departments at our rural regional hospital.

TD and Bistro 900 present the PRHF 4th Annual Valentine’s Dance

by prh foundation in Business Partnerships, Entertainment, Fundraising, Programs 0 comments 1877

Preparations Underway for 4th Annual Party on Saturday February 13th

(Pembroke) – A new year brings new opportunities: TD and Bistro 900 are proud to present the 4th Annual Valentine’s Dance! With two lead sponsors, new location, and a new headlining band, the TD Valentine’s Dance on February 13th is bigger than ever before.

“We are thrilled to be at the Travelodge’s Bistro 900 for our fourth annual party,” shared Committee Chair and Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation board member Eli Boucher. “For $25, each attendee can dance away to four hours of live music night with two tremendous bands, appetizers served all night long, and a $10 coupon for Bistro 900 all while supporting regional health care.”

Headlining the night is the fantastic Me & Him. Often seen around the Ottawa area at lively bar nights playing crowd favourites or their own athematic songs, they’re bringing their big party sound to the Travelodge for partiers all night. Thanks to generous donations of local businesses the signature silent auction is growing by the day.

“The night is shaping up to be a tremendous party for attendees,” shared co-chair and Pembroke Regional Hospital Foundation Fundraising and Development Assistant Sarah Neadow. “Bring a group of friends, a dance partner, or find them there, this is going to be a terrific party in February.”

The Valentine’s Dance and Silent auction is hosted by Bistro 900 and the Travelodge Pembroke on Saturday February 13, 2016. Doors open at 8:00PM with the Joe Lance Band as the opening act. Tickets are $25 and now available from Bob’s Music, Moncion Metro and the Foundation Office.

25 West Taps and Tapas Throw a Party for the Whole Community

by prh foundation in Donations, Entertainment, Fundraising 0 comments 2947

“Building upon last year’s success, we wanted to throw an open door party to the community,” shared Roy. “We saw tons of guests over the two days of festivities with uproarious entertainers that offered something for everyone.”

Over the two nights, guests were treated to the comedy and routines of drag performers Dixie Landers and Markida Brown. Beyond their uproarious acts, people danced all night to the sounds of DJ LeJam.

Wade Berard, Nancy Warren, Roy Rogers

“It was a fantastic opportunity to throw a terrific party for a great cause,” shared Wade. “The MRI is a desperately needed service for our community. The Pembroke Regional Hospital serves the 100,000 people of Renfrew County and we wanted to be a part of making a difference.”

To date, over $4,260,000 has been raised towards the purchase and installation of an MRI at the regional hospital. With less than $240,000 remaining in their goal, it is the perfect time to be a part of the path to improving access to comprehensive health care, closer to home.
